"Jazz is the freedom to play anything, whether it has been done before or not."

Duke Ellington, 1945

Under this motto the Duo Sunswept Sunday dedicates itself to the music of Duke Ellington. The Stuttgart percussionist Daniel Kartmann and the Berlin guitarist Torsten Papenheim explore the work of the great American composer with a love of detail and a sense for the grand form. In their playing, they focus on a central aspect of Ellington's music - timbre. The two musicians approach the selected pieces, most of which were written in the 1950s and 1960s, in very different ways - sometimes a single short melodic motif provides the initial spark for the arrangement; sometimes it is a particular groove or the buzz of a bass string; elsewhere it is the mood of the piece or its title.

Sunswept Sunday illuminates rather lesser-known sides of Duke Ellington's oeuvre and makes it clear that his music remains exciting almost 50 years after his death and even beyond the classic big band lineup.

Die zweite Tour im Jahr 2023! Im Gepäck CD und Vinyl "Halfway to Dawn"!

Jazz is the freedom to play anything, whether it has been done before or not.“
